Greys Court, Henley-on-Thames
Description
Working for the National Trust on a 12 month project, St Blaise erected a large temporary roof structure to allow the re-roofing of the tiled slopes. The varied and complicated roof structures once exposed, required extensive heavy oak carpentry repairs. The elevations were variously conserved, repointed and limewashed.
The works involved:
- Associated repairs to the early heavy oak carpentry roof structure.
- Repairs to the banded brick and flint masonry in hand made bricks to order.
- Rebuilding of the chimneys.
- Localized stone replacement and repointing.
- Sensitive installation of thermal insulation whilst allowing air circulation.
- A demanding site with limited access requiring the greatest of care with heavy plant.
- Remained open to the public throughout.
The Building
The mansion house is a grade 1 listed building situated within the estate of Greys Court. Its construction varies throughout the history of repairs and alterations. The principle range (east) was constructed in the late 1600c and is of flint and brick banding which is typical of the area. The North Bay (Georgian) north and west elevations are additions added in 1800c and 1900c.
