Ashdown House, Swindon
Description
The repair and conservation of the external masonry fabric and fenestration of an almost exquisitely perfect example of a highly developed Caroline house in the Dutch style.
The works involved:
- A neighbouring dis-used clunch quarry was reopened by St Blaise to provide the correct replacement stone.
- The fenestration was worked over intensively and repaired, largely in situ, most carefully.
- All replacement masonry was worked in temporary banker shops on site.
- The team included conservators as well as masons.
- Associated roof and parapet gutters were repaired during the contract.
