Stoke Park Monuments, Bristol
Description
The follies lie in the grounds of the Dower House in Stoke Park. They were built as part of extensively landscaped romantic parkland.
The works involved:
- Both the vaults of the Barn Hill and Hermitage Wood Tunnels were sundered and new formwork was constructed to rebuild them.
- The Hermitage Tunnel has particularly fine rusticated Baroque keystones to its arches.
- All the work was informed by extensive archaeological excavation and much more was found than anticipated.
- The Cart Pond was very damaged and ruinous. It was much rebuilt including the conduits that fed it and drained it through Barn Wood and its tunnel.
- This project was shortlisted for a RICS Conservation Award.
