St Hieritha's Church, North Devon
Description
The Church of St Hieritha at Chittlehampton was once a great pilgrimage church. It is very early foundation, possibly eighth century and completely rebuilt again between 1470 and 1520. The present church building is largely as it was after a major restoration completed in 1872.
The works involved:
- Lead gutter and roof replacements to the North and South transepts and Chancel.
- Replacement and repair of carved stone finials and copings.
- Rebuilding of merlons and embrasures.
- Fine, full face mortar repairs to ornate 15 century Beer stone friezes.
- Copings and Pinnacles – Bath Stone.
