Salisbury Cathedral
Description
As part of the ongoing major repairs at Salisbury, now more than two thirds of the way through its 25 year programme to conserve the masonry fabric of the cathedral, St Blaise has undertaken two phases of work, primarily on the window dressings, the buttresses and the blind arcading in the parapets. Decayed stone was replaced only where absolutely necessary, being conserved where possible. Purbeck marble shafts and their Victorian replacements were also conserved, with localised replacements. The shafts were re-polished.
The works involved:
- St Blaise took over responsibility for the Cathedral’s own scaffolding and hoists.
- Localised masonry replacement, where necessary.
- Conservation of blind arcading in the parapets.
- Replacement of masonry to buttresses and window dressings.
- Conservation and re-polishing of marble shafts and associated stonework.
