Emmanuel College Chapel, Cambridge
Description
A reordering to Christopher Wren’s original design intent. The Cambridge Chapel was violently reordered by Sir Arthur Blomfield in the late c19th to suit the liturgical needs of the time.
The works involved:
- The reredos was dismantled and rebuilt in its original position and the alter rails repaired and their mitres renewed to allow them to return and scribing to the pilasters.
- New garlands, festoons, swags and drops were carved, gilt and fixed to the reredos.
- Wren’s original floor was found below Blomfield’s and the whole was raised to conserve and represent the original.
- Academic historic and archaeological research informed the decision making process.
- The project won the Royal Fine Arts Commission Award for Conservation.
